HRVATSKO METEOROLOSKO DRUSTVO

CROATIAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY

The Croatian Meteorological Society is small society with a long tradition. It was established in 1965. Its 130 members are professional or amateour meteorologists and other friends of meteorology.

Activities of the Society are:

  • popularisation of meteorology
lectures on meteorology in schools

articles in newspapers

participation in radio and TV programme

  • publishing activities
    •

    • Croatian meteorological journal
scientific journal in the field of meteorology and related sciencies published once a year, sent to many institutional subscribers in meteorological and hydrological services, business and industry, universities and libraries (300 in country and 200 in 20 European countries
    • books and other publications
  • organisations of meteorological and related conferencies
  • co-operation with other meteorological and related societies

OVERALL PICTURE OF METEOROLOGY IN CROATIA

Meteorological and Hydrological Service (MHS)

Meteorological and Hydrological Service (MHS), the National authority for meteorology and hydrology in Croatia, employs about 500 people. There are nine departments:

1. Hydrology

2. Weather forecasting (with telecommunications)

3. Agrometeorology (with silvometeorology)

4. Environmental monitoring (water and air)

5. Research

6. Climatology (meteorological networks, data collection and processing)

7. Marine meteorological center (outside Zagreb, in Split)

8. Hail suppression

9. Administration and maintenance

Meteorological and Hydrological Service (MHS) being the carrier of operational and research work and also is the Croatian international representative. Main part of the MHS is in Zagreb, and there are also two regional units Marine Meteorological Center, in Split, and Marine Office in Rijeka.

The staff is organised mainly in the two levels:

- Technicians, secondary school education, dealing with the basic activities of either operational meteorology or instruments and equipment;

- Meteorologists, graduated meteorologists, in charge of research, management responsibilities and policy development;

Outside Meteorological and Hydrological Service (MHS)

Besides MHS specialized meteorological services are organized within the Air Traffic Control and Croatian Army.

PANORAMA OF EDUCATION IN CROATIA

Main University in Croatia is University of Zagreb. It consists of different faculties such as Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Agronomy and other. All Faculties have subdivisions / departments similar as the Faculty of Science and Mathematics listed below:

University of Zagreb

Faculty of Science and Mathematics:

Department of Biology Department of Chemistry

Department of Geography Department of Geology

Department of Mathematics Department of Physics

Department of Geophysics

The course of study of Geophysics with Meteorology at Zagreb started with a number of subjects as early as 1898 while the study of Geophysics as a separate academic field was founded only in 1947. This course of study is organized in several branches: Meteorology, Geophysics (Seismology, Gravity and Earth Magnetism) and Physical Oceanography.

The first and second years are identical with the course of the study of Engineering Physics. The first two years provide students with basics knowledge in mathematics and physics. In the third year the students are introduced to the study of the physics of the gaseous, liquid and solid elements of the Earth while specialization is allowed in the fourth year. The curriculum meets the international requirements for the education of experts in geophysics. At the end of this four-year course of study the students are required to produce a paper and pass a final examination and are then awarded a B.Sc. in Physics with a specialization in Geophysics and Meteorology.

Students from other departments of the Faculty of Science and Mathematics as well as by students of some other faculties attend a number of courses in Geophysics with Meteorology. Thus, for example, future teachers of physics and geology with geography attend the introductory courses in Geophysics and the future production experts from the Faculty of Agronomy attend the introductory courses in Agroclimatology.
